At around 3,800 m (12,500 ft), Shandur Pass connects Chitral with Gilgit-Baltistan, 212 km from Gilgit. Beside a lake on the plateau lies the Shandur Polo Ground — often called the highest in the world.

Each year the Shandur Polo Festival brings Chitral and Gilgit teams together for a fast, free-style game watched by thousands.
